Senior Portraits Don't Have to Look Like Everyone Else's

When you think about senior portraits, what comes to mind?

Maybe a pretty location. A nice outfit. A smile for the camera.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that — but senior portraits can be so much more.

One of my favorite parts of creating a custom portrait session is looking at the person in front of me, looking at the location we have to work with, and asking:

What can we create here that feels different?

A recent portrait session gave me the perfect opportunity to do exactly that.

This particular session wasn’t technically a senior portrait session, but it’s a great example of the creativity, planning and photography techniques I bring to my senior portrait experiences.

Sometimes the Location Is Only the Starting Point

We were photographing at a track in the middle of the day.

There were bleachers, pavement, a field, a track and plenty of daylight.

I could have simply photographed what was already there.

Instead, I wanted to create something more dramatic.

For several of the athletic portraits, my vision was a darker, moodier environment with focused light falling directly on her. I wanted the background to disappear and the athlete to become the obvious center of the image.

The interesting part?

It wasn’t dark outside at all.

By combining off-camera strobes with intentional camera settings, I was able to control the available daylight and create the look I had envisioned.

The behind-the-scenes photograph tells one story.

The finished portrait tells a completely different one.

That’s one of the things I love most about photography.

We don’t always have to find the perfect light. Sometimes we create it.

Your Senior Portrait Session Shouldn’t Be a Formula

That same idea carries directly into the way I approach senior portraits.

I don’t want every senior who comes to Dream Alley Photography to leave with the same photographs in different clothes.

One senior might want something dramatic and athletic.

Another might want soft and natural.

Someone else may love fashion, dance, theater, music, books, cars or simply an incredible outfit they feel amazing wearing.

And sometimes one person is all of those things at once.

That’s why a custom senior portrait session shouldn’t begin with a list of poses.

It should begin with the senior.

There Is More Than One Side to You

Look through the photographs from this session and you’ll see exactly what I mean.

In one image, she’s strong and serious on the starting block.

In another, she’s standing confidently underneath a dramatic sky.

Then the track shoes come out and suddenly there’s a huge smile.

Change the clothes and location slightly, and the entire session takes on another personality — relaxed, stylish and completely different from the athletic portraits.

It’s still the same person.

That’s the point.

Your senior portraits don’t have to choose between the athlete, the artist, the fashion lover, the quiet side, the goofy side or the confident side.

There’s room for all of it.

And years from now, that’s what I want these photographs to bring back.

Not simply what you looked like.

Who you were.

Dream Alley Photography in Grayson, GA offers senior portraits that capture individuality with a polished finish.

You Don’t Have to Know How to Pose

This is something I think seniors — and parents — need to hear.

You do not have to walk into your senior portrait session knowing what to do in front of a camera.

That’s my job.

We’ll talk before the session about clothing, interests, locations and the kind of images you are drawn to. During your session, I’ll guide you through posing, expression and movement.

Sometimes I’ll ask for something specific.

Sometimes we’ll experiment.

And sometimes the best photograph happens in the few seconds in between.

You don’t need modeling experience.

You don’t need to practice poses in the mirror.

You just need to show up as yourself.

I’ll take it from there.

Senior Portraits Are About More Than Senior Year

Yes, senior portraits mark graduation.

But when I photograph a high school senior, I’m also photographing someone right in the middle of a pretty remarkable transition.

You’re looking at the end of childhood and the beginning of whatever comes next.

College.

Work.

Military service.

Travel.

A creative career.

Or maybe something you haven’t even figured out yet.

That’s why I believe senior portraits deserve more than a quick photograph just because it’s something you’re “supposed” to do.

This is a chapter worth remembering.

And the portraits we create should feel worthy of it.
